About the Course

Description:

With new technology and materials constantly evolving, equipment is getting smaller and lighter, yet still remaining sufficiently strong. Two questions are now brought to the forefront: “How small can we go?” and “How small are we willing to go?” In this four day workshop, we explore the unconventional ways to do rescue. Using small diameter (SD) rope and cordage, we will look at the pros and cons of trading more versatile equipment for lighter alternatives. Through discussion, practice, and testing, students will be exposed to techniques and equipment that follow a minimalist approach. With a population that embraces an active lifestyle, rescues deep in the backcountry are becoming more prevalent. Access and resources may be limited, increasing the emphasis to pack light and conserve energy. Students will be challenged to improvise with less equipment and less manpower, reducing the ability to rely on endless resources that may be available roadside.

Skills covered may include:

  • AHDs [SMC Vector, Monopods, Wrap and Frap AHDs]
  • Anchors [Removable anchors, Multi point anchors]
