About the Course

What's it all about?

This 5-day, 10+ hours per day seminar is designed for rescue and rope access team leaders. Each day will be a combination of classroom learning and preparation followed by field-testing of systems, including the failing of those systems. This failure will be followed up with the students implementing a recovery of the system and rescuing the rescuer and patient from the failed system – a truly worse case rescue scenario all while recording relevant data and documenting practices.

Attendees will have the rare-if-ever opportunity to experience failures that are usually only talked about as theory and execute recoveries from those failures.

The course has been refined over the last 2 years to minimise in-class time and maximise time on rope. Be prepared to work long, and hard, hours. This is a 'grown-up' course. You will leave this course a better leader, and rescuer.

Field topics may include:

Highlines and double reeve systems

Skate Blocks

TTRS and DMDB choices and consequences

Pick-offs

AHD failures

Students must have sufficient rope rescue skill and experience in order to fully participate in the course. Be advised that on Day One participants will be assessed on their personal skills. They will then be streamed accordingly, with an advanced stream and a regular stream, and will complete scenarios according to their skill level.

Personal skills to be assessed include, but are not limited to:

  • Ascending rope via more than one technique (mechanical ascenders, prusiks, RAD climbing, rope walking)
  • Changeover mid ascent to descent.
  • Pass knots on ascent/descent
  • Conduct rope to rope transfers whilst suspended
  • Conduct individual pick offs using a variety of techniques (MA, counterbalance, croll-to-croll bump)
  • Rig multi point, austere anchors
  • Break into tight lines/transfer loads between tensioned lines
  • Rig reeving and non-reeving highlines
  • Rig various skate block configurations
  • Conduct a crosshaul
  • Rig AHD's in various configurations (Tripod, Easel Leg, Bipod & Monopod)
